My name is Taya Holland. I live in Foster City, California with my husband, 14 year old daughter and 8 year old son. If asked to describe myself in three words, I’d say I am bighearted, optimistic, and organized. These characteristics are embodied within my daily routine-personal and professional. I graduated from high school in 1989 and began taking classes toward my degree in elementary education. In 1991, my daughter was born. I immediately knew I would not be able to leave her to go back to school. I still wanted to work with children, so I decided to open my own childcare center. What could be better? I was able to stay home with my daughter, contribute to my family financially, and still spend my days teaching and playing with children.
I operate a licensed small family childcare center in my home and absolutely love what I do! For as long as I can remember, I have been caring for children in one way or another. It started with neighborhood babysitting at the age of 12 and continues 22 years later with me being a licensed home childcare provider. I consider myself extremely lucky to be working with children and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
When deciding what type of program I wanted to offer, I tried to keep in mind what I would want for my own children. Although the center has evolved throughout the 15 years I have been licensed, the sentiment has stayed the same. My program is structured yet leaves room for flexibility; meals are planned yet we are able to make substitutions when we feel like it. We enjoy playing indoors as well as outdoors. We enjoy reading, coloring, painting, dancing to music, playing musical instruments, learning our numbers, colors, shapes and letters, watching a movie when the urge hits us and most of all making HUGE messes! Someone once described my center as “organized chaos”, and I couldn’t agree more. I feel very blessed to be one of the few who really enjoy going to “work” every day.
Like any other parent, my first priority is my family; my husband and children. With all the negativity in the media regarding out-of-home care for your child, I can only imagine a parent feeling anxiety and hesitation. As you read, I ask you to not make a decision about me or my center just yet. Words on a page can never replace a gut feeling. I would like you to meet me and see my home and go forward from there. I specifically chose not to have any forms on my website because I strongly feel it’s important to meet face to face, person to person and parent to parent. The choices you make for your child today will greatly impact who they are tomorrow
